Astragalus
(Astragalus membranaceus)
History
Astragalus has been used for thousands of years in China. It was first mentioned in the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica (Shen nung pen tsao ching), an ancient Chinese medical text. The Chinese called it Huang-chi (huang means yellow, chi means leader). In Chinese medicine, astragalus was said to "tonify the spleen, blood and Qi," and was used for "wasting and thirsting syndrome." It was used very widely as a non-stimulating support for the Wei chi "defensive energy", in other words, disease resistance. Some of the specific Chinese indications alluded to a stimulant effect on the immune system. For example it was used as a tonic for the lungs, for frequent colds or shortness of breath. The Chinese also used it internally for chronic ulcerations and persistent infections.
Uses
Enhances immune function. Used in chronic infectious diseases such as bronchitis, sinusitis and AIDS. Traditional Chinese doctors consider astragalus a true tonic that can strengthen debilitated patients but it is never used during the illness.
Usual daily adult dose is 6 to 15 Gm.
