Green Earth :: Cardiovascular health
Many people are looking for alternative ways to treat high cholesterol levels. There are several options here. First, you should consider a fish oil supplement. Although the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil (EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid and DHA or docosahexaenoic acid) will only raise the HDL, or good cholesterol, a little, the Omega-3s have been shown to prevent plaque formation by cholesterol. Everyone who is concerned about heart health should be taking a fish oil supplement as it is difficult to get EPA and DHA in the typical American diet. You should get a minimum of 1,000mg combined EPA and DHA daily (this usually requires 3 by 1,000mg capsules or 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil).
Policosanol is a supplement derived from sugar cane that has been shown in several studies to reduce total cholesterol by 17-21% and raise HDL by 8-15%. The recommended dosage based on these studies is 20 mg daily.
Plant sterols (Beta-sitosterol, Campesterol, Stigmasterol, Sitostanol ester, Campestanol) are being used in several margarine products (such as Benecol) and have been shown in studies to reduce total cholesterol by 10-15%, but they have little effect on HDL. The rcommended dosage is 1,200 mg daily. The brand product Cholestatin is a combination of these plant sterols.
