Green Earth :: Digestive
It often seems that every other person I talk to has some kind of digestive issue. Almost invariably you can treat any digestive problem from simple indigestion to irritable bowel syndrome to ulcers with an herbal bitter combination. The bitter herbs stimulate the taste buds, which leads to a reflex release of gastrin in the intestinal tract. Gastrin is a hormone that helps to “reorder” digestive function. It helps to restore enzyme production, regulate acid production, improve peristalsis (rhythmic movement of the intestines), reduce gassiness, and increase mucus production (mucus lines the stomach and the intestines to protect the gut lining from the acid and enzymes as well as soothe ulcers). If necessary, bitters also have an aperient, or mild laxative, action.
